Destinations
Of the Month

Rio de Janeiro has a majestic beauty, with built-up
areas nestled between a magnificent bay and dazzling
beaches on one side and an abruptly rising mountain
range, covered by a luxuriant tropical forest, on the
other. This unique landscape makes Rio one of the most
beautiful cities in the world, justifying its title of
"Marvelous City" (Cidade Maravilhosa). Rio's cultural
life is intense and varied. In any event, this second
largest city in Brazil is still a major cultural capital
and, to some extent, its "emotional" capital as well.
The Cariocas - as the inhabitants are called - thrive on
dance, drink, beach, sport and sun. It's a city of
Dionysian spirit whose people live life head-first.
Carnival is often a more important consideration than
weather for travelers deciding when to come to Rio. The
city is in full party mode, and the excitement on the
streets is unsurpassable. However, everyone becomes a
little unglued around the time of Carnival - there are
more car accidents than usual, prices are noticeably
more expensive and you won't have a moment alone. Still,
it is Carnaval. Rio is jumping with things to see. There
is a good collection of museums housing everything from
20th-century Brazilian art to information on Brazil's
indigenous people; charming old neighborhoods; exotic
parks and gardens, and unforgettable mountain views of
the city.
